Spam increase as Gmail CATCHPA cracked
A report in searchsecurity.com has identified a surge in spam originating form Google Gmail accounts at the end of February. MessageLabs identified the increase and has warned that spammers have found ways of circumventing CAPTCHAS (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). The system is designed to prevent automated sign ups as the user must enter the on-screen letters or phrase to validate that a human is requesting the account. CAPTCHAS are widely used by email providers, as well as most social networking sites.
The Gmail accounts may have been created either by using individuals to manually create accounts, or by developing an algorithm to crack the CAPTCHA computationally. Google is aware of the problem and are taking steps to solve the problem.
